Department Of psychiatry

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

Psychiatric help is needed by many people for a variety of reasons. The problems range from sudden panic attacks, scary hallucinations, self-harm thoughts, or hearing "voices." Or can be long-term, such as feeling sad, hopeless, or anxious that never go away or problems in the functioning of everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

Diagnosing Patients

Physicians and Psychiatrists perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests which when combined with discussions with patients will help to provide the patient's physical and mental state. The expert Psychiatrists at Kasturi Hospitals will try to understand the complex relationship between emotional and other medical illnesses and the relationships between genetics and family history, evaluate medical and psychological inferences, make a diagnosis, and work with patients to develop treatment plans.

Treatments

Type of treatments includes forms of psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions, and other treatments (such as electroconvulsive therapy or ECT), as per the patient’s need. Psychotherapy also called talk therapy, is a treatment that involves talking between a therapist and patient. It can be used to treat a range of mental disorders and emotional traumas. Psychotherapy aims to decimate or control disabling or troubling symptoms so the patient can function better. Depending on the extent of the problem, treatment may take just a few sessions over a week or two or may take many sessions over years. Psychotherapy can be done individually, as a couple, with a family, or in a group.

Psychiatrists usually prescribe medications in addition to psychotherapy. Class of Medications are:

  • Antidepressants - treat depression, panic disorder, PTSD, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and eating disorders.
  • Antipsychotic medications - treat psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.
  • Sedatives and anxiolytics - treat anxiety and insomnia.
  • Hypnotics - induce and maintain sleep.
  • Mood stabilizers - treat bipolar disorder.
  • Stimulants - treat ADHD.
