Intrauterine insemination (IUI)is a fertility treatment which involves by placing spermsinside womans uterus to facilitate the fertilization. The goal of IUI is to increasenumber of the sperm which reaches to the fallopian tubes & subsequentlyincreases the chance of fertilization.
IUI supply the sperm has benefit by giving it to a head start, but stillneeds a sperm to reach & fertilize egg on its own. It was a less invasive & less expensive option when compared toin vitro fertilization.
When is IUI used?
The most common reasons for the IUI are very low sperm count or decreased in the sperm mobility.
Even though, IUI can be selected asa fertility treatment for any of the following conditions:
- A hostile cervical condition, which includescervical mucusproblems
- Cervical scar tissue from the past surgeries which can hinder the sperms ability to enter the uterus
- Ejaculation dysfunction
- Women who are having severe disease of the fallopian tubes
- Women with a history of bad pelvic infections
- Women with a moderate to severeendometriosis
How does IUI work?
Before performing intrauterine insemination, ovulation stimulating medications will be used, in which case will be carefully monitoring is necessary to determine when the eggs are been mature. The IUI method will then be done around the time of ovulation, generally about 24-36 hours after the surge in the LH hormone which indicates ovulation will occur soon.
A semen sample is collected and will be washed by the lab to separate the semen from seminal fluid. A soft catheter will be used to insert the washed sperm directlyinto the uterus. This process will maximize the number of sperm cells which areplaced in the uterus, thereby increasing the possibility ofgetting conception.
TheIUI procedure will takes only a few minutes & involves minimal discomfort. The nextstep in IUI is to watch forthe signs & symptoms of the pregnancy.
What are the risks of IUI?
The chances of gettingpregnant with multiples will be increased if you are taking fertility medication when are having IUI. There is also a minute risk of infection after performing IUI.
How successful is IUI?
The success of the IUI based on the several factors. If a couple has the IUI method performed in each month, success rates can reach as high as 20% per cyclebased on the variables like female age, the reason forthe infertility, & whether the fertility drugs were used, among the other variables.
While IUI is a less invasive & less expensive option, pregnancy rates from the IUI were lower than those from the IVF. If you think you are interested in IUI, talk with the doctor to discuss your options.
