• Intend for the direct skin-to-skin contact with your baby soon after the birth.
  • The first yellowish breast milk called as colostrum, though produced in small amount, is enough to meet needs of your baby.
  • A crying baby need body contact of mother.
  • Bathe a newborn with the plain lukewarm water for the first 7 – 10 days. Soap & oil may be used later on. There is no need to of using medicated soaps and baby soaps & oils. Because some babies may develop skin rash with the usage of these kind of soaps. Any non-scented bath soap & a locally preferred oil liketil(sesame) oil, coconut oil, groundnut oil or mustard oil is required.
  • Talcum powder, including the special baby powder, will irritates a babys nostrils & can also cause severe lung disease and it gets caked in the skin folds. Avoid the usage of all types of powders. If it is necessary restrict the application to the nappy area or where the skin tends to irritate. Never buy or use prickly heat powders; they are usually medicated and unsafe for the babies.
  • Some children may get skin rashes withthe usage of besan powder ormalaicalled as milk cream. In general, doctors wont recommend their application.
  • Some newborns may have the swollen breasts which will settle on their own after some few weeks. Pressing the breasts to squeeze milk can be dangerous & should never be done.
  • Dont try to push foreskin of male childs penis to split it from soft front portion. It is meant to protect delicate part of the penis.
  • Do not put oil into the ears & nostrils of newborn. Oil, if aspirated into lungs, can be very dangerous. The babys nose can sometimes been obstructed by a thick secretions. These should be moistened with the cotton soaked in water & then removed gently with a clean cloth.
  • Do not clean the tongue & mouth of a baby.Avoid pacifiers(dummies) besides interfering with the proper feeding habit, pacifiers increase risk of infections (including middle ear infection) & malocclusion of the teeth.
  • Never use ear buds or cotton buds for the baby. After a bath, use the corner of the towel to clean the external ear. The wax generally found in the ear canal protects it. Do not try to remove it. Also, do not blow into babys ears after a bath.
