The fallopian tubes are two thin tubes present on each side of the uterus. This female reproductive organ connects the ovaries and the uterus. Fallopian tubes lead the mature ovum from the ovaries to the uterus. When an egg is fertilized by sperm, then it moves through the fallopian tube to the uterus for the implantation. In the obstructed fallopian tubes, an egg cannot travel through the tube which is otherwise called Tubal factor infertility. This block can occur on one or both sides that causes infertility in women.
Blocked fallopian tubes are the common cause of infertility. When a fallopian tube is blocked, the egg cannot meet the sperm and fertilization could not happen.
If both the tubes are blocked, then Fallopian Tube Obstruction treatment is the only way to achieve pregnancy. In the partial blocks of fallopian tubes, pregnancy may be achieved, but the risk of ectopic pregnancy is higher.
When one fallopian tube is blocked, it won’t affect fertility because ova can travel through the unblocked fallopian tube. There are certain fertility drugs that would increase the chances of ovulation on the open side.
The most common reasons for fallopian tubes blocks are:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Previous abdominal surgery
- Previous ectopic pregnancy
- Ruptured appendix
- Fibroids, Scar tissue
- STD infection especially gonorrhea or Chlamydia
Tubal blockage symptoms
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Pain during coitus
- Pain during urination
- Pain during menstruation
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- How are blocked fallopian tubes diagnosed?
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) : In this X-ray study, fallopian tubes inside view is studied that helps to diagnose the blockages. In this procedure, a dye is introduced through cervix using a tiny tube. Once the dye is administered, X-ray of the pelvic area will be taken.
Laparoscopy: When all the tests fail to bring the exact report, finally the gynecologist adopts Laparoscopy to view inside of the uterus and other parts with the help of a laparoscope.
Fallopian Tube Obstruction Treatment
Generally Salpingectomy (or) tubal surgery is performed for the fallopian tube obstruction. In this surgery, either one or both blocked fallopian tubes are removed by leaving the uterus and ovaries intact. Though the procedure was developed to address Ectopic pregnancy, it is also performed for other conditions or diseases in the female reproductive system.
