Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is an irregular bleeding from theuterus, it will be longer or heavier than the usual or it wont occur at regular time. For example, if you are having heavy bleeding during periods or in between periods. Abnormal uterine bleeding has various causes. Sometimes it may be caused by changes inthe hormonelevels. And it can also be caused by the problems like growths in the uterus or clotting problems.

CAUSES OF ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING

So many different things may cause abnormal uterine bleeding. Pregnancy is most common cause of this uterine bleeding. Polyps or fibroids (small and large growths) in the uterus may also cause the bleeding. Occasionally, a thyroid problem, infection to the cervix or cancer to the uterus may also cause the abnormal uterine bleeding.

In most of the women, abnormal uterine bleeding will caused by a hormone imbalance. When the hormones are the problem, doctors will call the problem as the dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or DUB. Abnormal bleeding may also caused by the hormone imbalance is more common in the teenagers or in women who are approaching to menopause stage.

These are just some few problems that may cause abnormal uterine bleeding. These problems can also occur at any age group, but the probable cause of abnormal uterine bleeding generally depends on the age.
DIAGNOSIS OF ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING
The tests doctor may orders will depends on age of the patient. If you could be pregnant, doctor may suggest to perform pregnancy test. If bleeding is too heavy, in addition to the other tests, doctor will also check blood count to make sure that you don’t have the anemia which is low iron from the blood loss.

An ultrasound exam of pelvic area will show both of the uterus & ovaries. It will also show the exact cause of your bleeding.

Your doctor will also suggest to perform an endometrial biopsy. This is a test of the uterine lining. It’s performed by keeping a thin plastic tube called as the catheter into the uterus. A tiny piece of uterine lining is extracted out & sent to a lab for testing. The test will show if there is cancer or a change in the cells. A biopsy can also performed in the doctor’s office & causes only mild pain.

Another test called as hysteroscopy. A thin tube with a tiny camera in it is kept into the uterus. This camera will let the doctor to see inside of the uterus. If anything is abnormal will shows up, doctor will get a biopsy.
TREATMENT FOR ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING
There are various treatment options for the abnormal bleeding, based on the cause of the bleeding, age and whether if you want to get pregnant in the future. Doctor will help to decide which treatment option is right for you. Or, if doctor decides that a hormone imbalance is causing the abnormal bleeding, you & doctor may decide to wait and see if bleeding improves on its own.
